First of all This book is AMAZING I've probably read it over 10 times.Or maybe more...I think that this is one of my favourite books of ALL timeIt's all about a 15 year old 'geek' named Harriet Manners.Harriet is pulled along to a live clothes show by her best friend Nat and is totally not expecting to be plucked out of a crowd and turned into a model.Harriet has no idea what she is doing but as she's pulled into the unexpected world of fashion, she struggles to find herself in midst of all the glitter and glammer.First of all, I couldn't stop laughing the whole way through. I don't know how Holly Smale does it but I honestly could not put this book down and I was completely captivated the whole way through by Harriet's geekiness and utter uniquenessHarriet was a fantastic protagonist and her voice really grew on me as I read more of the book. Personally I could relate to Harriet's character because it was funny, intelligent, understanding, quirky and relatable all at the same time.I loved all of the characters but I especially loved Harriets parents.I think that step mothers have a certain stereo type and its always refreshing to read a book which takes its own course in the way the characters form.And Richard ?? How do I even start ?I have honestly never seen a dad more utterly amazing and hilarious than him.Whilst Annabel was the responsible and wise parent who kept everything under control I felt that Richard was in someways a teenager in an adult's body. Having them both really balanced the book out in that sense.Now onto Nat and Toby.Could anyone ask for better fictional friends??Nat was a really good friend to Harriet even with everything that happened and I think that I would of acted the way that Nat did, if put in that scenario. Reading about their strange but powerful friendship was one if the reasons I love this book so much.At first I was a tiny bit freaked out by Toby's 'stalkerish' ways but by the end of the book I really enjoyed his parts in the book.I hated Alexa's character because lets face it, who wouldn't ?But, having her as Harriet's worst enemy and infamous school bully pushed the plot into a more reality based theme, showing that Harriet's life is far from perfect, model or otherwiseI felt so giddy in the final scene with her and Harriet in and I just wanted Harriet to show her who was boss already !!The other characters such as Wilbur,Yuka and Nick were an excellent addition to the plot and they helped to move it along and Wilbur was not to mention the most best fairy godmother EVER!!!Altogether, the message it sent out was a unique one and it basically said 'BE YOURSELF'.Holly Smale's debut novel is witty, unique and just ....... AMAZING !!!So please don't hesitate to read it!!!!! Having recently read several rather suspenseful and fairly serious books, Geek Girl turned out to be the perfect book to wind down with. Rather unpopular at school, geeky Harriet Manners tries to avoid being noticed by others, especially her nemesis, Alexa, and her even geekier stalker, Toby. Unfortunately, her loyalty to her best friend, Nat, lands her slap in the middle of the modeling world as well as in the center of more complications than she can deal with.I so needed to read something like this delightfully relaxing and, most of the time, hilariously funny story right now. Even the serious, leaning to the disastrous, parts of the story is written in an upbeat way that just keeps the smile hovering.Harriet is such a realistic, likable, and lifelike character, she makes the story come alive with her geeky statistics, natural doubts and fears, and often slightly off-beat observations. The even geekier Toby is absolutely lovable despite his weirdly accomplished role as Harriet's stalker.Even Harriet's sometimes-less-than-completely-honest father, and her stern lawyer stepmother, turned out to be characters that I felt sad to say good bye to at the end of the book. Nick, Harriet's deliciously handsome co-model, comes across as a flighty, slightly untouchable character at first. Fortunately, the young man redeems himself towards the end of the story.For a lighthearted, relaxing read full of laugh-out-loud humor and wickedly sharp wit, I recommend Geek Girl as an absolute must read. I've never written a Goodreads review before, so bear with me.Before I start, I'd like to say that I have read plenty of books with a similar storyline to Geek Girl - you know, geek is an outcast, geek meets popular guy with girlfriend, geek gets an epic makeover out of NOWHERE and then the popular guy falls for the geek. It's all over Wattpad, trust me.However, this is the first 'geek to chic' story that actually makes sense!Harriet is a likable (well, for the reader anyway), modest and awkward teenager who is relatable for many - so, good main character.There is a clear enemy side because Harriet lists people who don't like her - so, there's a good bit of conflict. The storyline was beautifully done, putting in hints that show big things that are happening in Harriet's life (eg. She's getting bullied and her bag has 'GEEK' written on it). Geek Girl doesn't show the protagonist as some shining, flawless goddess; you could have met Harriet Manners while walking down the street.Overall, I rate Geek Girl as 4.5/5 stars - I really love it and it's a fantastic book that I have proudly put out on my bulging bookcase.
