Ghost Canoe (1998) - Plot & Excerpts

Will Hobb's message in Ghost Canoe is to always follow one's instincts. This novel takes place on the rough and rugged shores on an island called Tatoosh off the Washington coast where a ship has a mysterious crashed and murder victim was found from the ship washed up. On a calmer more forested place close by called Cape Flattery. On the towering, rock cliffs of Tatoosh Nathan Mcallister, a fourteen year-old scottish boy lives with his mom and dad in a damp lighthouse where they must work every night to ensure the safety of all the passing ships. On the shores of Cape Flattery, a friendly, Makah, native American village sits with all of it's inhabitants and one trading post. Nathan's family is doing well on Tatoosh until Nathan's mom gets sick and moves to the village to recover. Being closer to all the people makes Nathan start to suspect others and the newcomers and the more he explores the more he learns. Soon, Nathan begins to relize that some of his theories were right and his search endangers his life as he begins to uncover the murder story and what the killer is after that may make him kill again. Throughout this story, the narrator follows Nathan around and it gets much more dramatic at the end.The book Ghost Canoe was a really intresting mystery story. The character I loved the most was Nathan Mcallister. I liked how he was so determined and brave to find out the answer to all the mischief that was going on even when it meant that he was risking his life. The few people he knew that he told about what he thought of the ship crash told him not to worry about it or leave it alone but because he followed his instincts, he was able to solve the mystery and find the treasure. This book reminded me alot about the Hardy Boys series because it was boys trying to solve a serious mystery and it was similar page count and how things progressed but just more personal because his family is involved. It's also similar because there's the one bad guy and Nathan asks others about their thought but does it in a less professional way. This story made you want to read it more to find out more of the mystery and it is not disapointing. The only critique I would have for this book was that it was an easy read and after finishing, you notice how you could have easily predicted the ending. Overall I did enjoy this book and I would reccomend it to anyone who wants a somewhat short mystery book to read for fun.

This book is terrible. It has potential, though. A boy and his family in the Northwest with a bunch of Native Americans, and a greedy dude who will gladly kill you for some Spanish treasure. But....IT STILL SUCKS. Besides, the kid goes fishing EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER. It's like:"Oh, la la la, look! A canoe up in the tree! Let's go look at it! I wonder what it means.... Let's go fishing!"later.."La la la, hey, look! It's Captain Bim! Someone stole your life's savings! I had better go fishing!" then "Oh no! Kane killed Dolla Bill! TO THE CANOES!!!!"Honestly one of the most pointless, annoying, and generally tedious books I've ever read.

What do You think about Ghost Canoe (1998)?

This book was about a 14 year old boy named Nathan MacAllister. He lives on the Tatoosh Island with his mom and dad. But him and his mom move to Neah bay because shes sick and needed to go to a place were she would get better. Once Nathan gets to Neah bay somebody comes to buy the village store. Once he comes alot of wierd things start to happen. Somebody money was stolen, there was a shipwreck and all the crew died except for the captain who went ashore, but then he was murdered. Then Nathan su

The theme statement in the book Ghost Canoe is that if you don’t believe someone about something you should go find out and prove what you believe. That is exactly what Nathan McAllister did. The book Ghost Canoe takes place in Washington State in a place called Cape Flattery. It is a cape that is very rocky and is usually very stormy. It has an island just off the shore that is called Tatoosh Island that has a light house that Nathan and his dad run. The book is about a 14-year old boy named Nathan McAllister. A ship crashes just off the shore and Nathan is told that there are no survivors. Nathan does not believe that there are no survivors because there have been footprints on the beach and there have been sightings of a wild hairy man. With Nathans new friend, Lighthouse George who is part of the local Makah tribe, they paddle around to different parts of the island t search for clues on how and why the ship sunk. In that process they found a skeleton in a canoe that leads t many questions that get answered.I thought this was a great book!! I have a hard time thinking about something bad about this book because there really isn’t anything. I really like how in different parts of the book there are parts that leave you wondering how did this happen and who did this, for example when the captain washed ashore with a knife stabbed in his heart. In the book Nathan is extremely curious and in real life I am like that to. If there is something I don’t know that I am interested in, I want to find out. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend and I would rate this book a 9/10.

Well i have been reading a book called Ghost Canoe by Will Hobbs, when i was looking for a book, i wanted a book that interested me and was about the outdoors, so i found this book and read the back of the cover and it sounded good so i started to read it but as i got halfway through the book it started to get boring because the same thing that went on in the beginning happened all throughout the book where he was trying to find out about the murder that happened and find out about the canoe which bored me because it was nothing like what i like to read about. At the beggining of the book their is a boy named Nathan MacAllister that is fourteen years old and he stays with them and learns many new things like how to hunt and fish with the indian tribe. Throughout the book Nathan is waliking around in the sand along the river and finds some footsteps, so he wants to find out where they came from. Also he finds a canoe but its not just an ordinary canoe, its a ghost canoe that has indian artifacts in it. Then Nathan notices a "hairy man" in the village but Nathan has no clue why he is their until he found out that he was looking for the "Ghost Canoe" with artifacts in it that he had found already. In the end Nathan finds out that Jack Khane was the killer in the murder. But I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend of mine just because of how boring this book was.
