It was almost noon. She stretched and slid out of bed, eager to find Bonita. She couldn’t wait to kiss her good morning, look into her eyes and see a reflection of honest emotion. Something real. For the first time in a long time, Kat felt real, too. She found Bonita sitting in the kitchen with a half-empty coffee cup and a table full of magazines and newspapers spread out in front of her. She jumped when Kat touched her shoulder. Since Bonita didn’t raise her face for a kiss, Kat kissed the top of her head, catching sight of a photo of them in the LA Times on the table. “We knew that was coming.” “But what about all this?” Bonita made a gesture that encompassed the rest of the magazines, all supermarket checkout tabloids. “I always ignore those. Where did you get them?” “Herb left them at the gate, and the guard brought them up. You can’t afford to ignore them this time, Kitty Kat.” Bonita thrust one into her hand. Kat blinked, uncomprehending.
