I found the structure of the story different to earlier ones in the series where we are introduced to all of the characters first and given a chance to get to know them before we meet our Vera. Here she is in from the beginning but yet the characters still get chance to develope for us before the action starts. It is easy to pick up the regulars in the series and remember their characteristics. As usual the author tells a good story with plenty of red herrings and the 'closed country house' scenario of the action means that there is a small finite number of suspects for you to work with from the outset.Did I get it right? Of course not even though you realise that all of the clues had been there for you all along , if only you had spotted them.Again another enjoyable read from this author. My only regret is that there is only another 2 left in the series. An interesting premise, the crime writer writing about a crime involving crime writers! Vera Stanhope is a beautifully crafted character and my enjoyment of Ann Cleeves' novels always rises when the policewoman arrives on the scene. Once again the cast of potential suspects are damaged people or they come with hidden baggage so one moment the reader points the finger at........ The next it's most definitely ........ But thankfully the outcome is credible and satisfactory.
Really enjoyed this book, I have read them all and felt this was the best.
