Good Luck Bear by Greg Foley is an adorable children’s book that is intended for children around ages 1-3. Like most children’s literature, this book includes animal characters which makes children really enjoy reading and listening to their parents read the book to them. This quick and simple book that talks about a little bear that is in search of a “lucky” four-leaf clover throughout the hills. Throughout the story, the little bear would run into some of his animal friends along the way. After many attempts, little bear had no luck finding a four leaf clover. Then suddenly, the little mouse helped little bear find a FIVE-leaf clover, which made little bear realize that he is extremely LUCKY. Greg Foley kept this book very simplistic so that children could fully understand and enjoy this cute story, that shows that if you really want to find something, and set your heart to it you can do or find anything. Throughout the entire story, the pages have the same set up and structure. For example, on every left side of the book there this a solid pastel page, with the written dialogue on the left page. On every right side of the book there is pictures. All the pictures look extremely similar, which include the same hill, the bear looking for a four-leaf clover, and a new friend trying to help little bear find the four-leaf clover.Foley written language is as simple as the visuals in this book. For example, on every page there is dialogue between the little bear and the new animal friend that he makes to help him find a clover. It seems as though every time the little bear doesn’t find a clover, the animal friend says something to make it seem as though the little bear is extremely unlucky. It isn’t until the very end that little bear realizes that he is very lucky. Honestly, this book is just a prime example of a young child’s perspective and mental process when they think that they are only lucky if they find a four-leaf clover (although there is not such thing). There seems to be a sad shortage of really good books about St Patrick's day. We have read many, but this is the only one I truly love for the younger age group. This is actually the third book about Bear by Greg Foley. They are all sweet and simple. In GOOD LUCK BEAR, Bear finds a three leaf clover and begins searching for the luck of a four leaf clover. Monkey, turtle, other animals all have opinions about luck or discouragement for Bear. A book about luck, not specific to St Patrick's day or the Irish, but fun nonetheless. Foley's winning combination of simplicity and softness triumph again.
