Gossie (2002) - Plot & Excerpts

Could be a primer on board booksThis is the original in a series of "Gossie" books by Olivier Dunrea that follow the adventures of a small yellow gosling who likes to wear bright red boots everyday. The action begins when our hero has lost her bright red boots. Where could they be? The simple text structure builds on Gossie's searchThe illustrations are simple and bold, and the text structure is simple. This allows a pre- or sub- verbal infant/toddler to follow along, making predictions and filling in the blanks. These are important steps in a young child's reading development. The story is short, cute, and sweet. Without hitting it too heavily on the head, it's a story about how sharing makes things go nicely, and wins friends.Good for reading when...Bed time, day-time, car trips--an all-rounder. Sugar/Acid Balance: Will hives break out all over if you read it more than 10 times? Your skin should remain clear even after you have read this every night for a month. Please note this statement has not been evaluated by the Federal Communications Commission, and should not be used while or in evaluating the text's potential to generate powerful radio waves which interfere with household appliances and your cat's mood.Length, Type and Other Notes 30 pages; Board book

Gossie is a perfect picture book. A picture book’s strength lies in the marriage of text and illustrations. Often this means that you learn something from the art that isn’t stated in the words. The full story is only appreciated when you view the book as a whole. In Gossie, the bright, uncluttered, utterly pleasing art is a direct interpretation of the brief and straightforward text. But viewing them separately would deprive you of the pure joy that springs from the pages. Simply reading, “She walks backwards,” does not fully convey the amount of happiness in those boots; you’ve got to see the accompanying illustration.Rounding out this perfect package is its size, about six inches square. Readers of all ages will agree: Gossie is a very cute and endearing book.In this first book in the Gossie & Friends Series, Gossie adores her red boots and she wears them everywhere. She is heartbroken when she discovers them missing one morning. They are soon spotted on the feet of Gertie, her newfound, boot-loving friend.
