Grandes Preguntas (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

A magnum opus which deserves more attention than it gets. It’s a graphic novel. The drawing/doodling/sketching is beautiful enough that I feel guilty finishing in a few hours what took Nilsen about a decade to achieve. You start with quick-drawn one-page comics depicting a bunch of birds and seeds. The birds look identical and have names from Algernon to Zwingley. The first several episodes made me laugh, so I expected the rest of the novel to be rife with humor. It is not, but there are moments and they are good.Perhaps Nilsen included those to put us in a receptive state of mind (with humor you can accept many ideas), or to explain why he started this behemoth in the first place. Then the hand-drawn panel borders straighten up, the birds look more like birds (still identical), and you get some wonderful interplay of black and white. Nilsen certainly varies the panel layout to keep interest and serve up a visual feast. This continues for the entirety of the story, and it’s really wonderful. As more characters step in (two humans, more birds, a snake, an owl, a pilot) Nilsen’s artistry steps up. As the story develops, so does the art. It’s an imperceptible pairing that makes the story more intimate, you’re following the characters sharpen in focus physically and personality-wise.The birds always look identical, but that does not stop them from having radically different personalities, and you can tell which is which better as you progress. It’s almost magical. The character arcs are something to savor.Nilsen knows how birds act, and how to show that with still images, which still amazes me. The pacing of the action rarely (if ever) confuses you.I won’t delve into the story because I’m still pondering it. It’s a thinker. Nilsen poses some big questions.*****

it was really hard to keep track of all of the birds. I think I didn't get a lot of it
