Gregor The Overlander Collection, Books 1-5 (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
Gregor and his little sister Boots fall into an Underworld with interesting characters, struggles for survival, and exciting quests. I thought the author did a great job bringing to live the complex relationships between the various underworld species. Boots was much needed comic relief for a pretty dark series. We stopped in book 3 because, in my son's words, "It was all talk talk talk. The quest didn't even start until half way through the book!" Many books today are good. There's the Harry Potter series, that was masterfully executed. There is the ever inspired Life of Pi (which I finished reading recently) that explores the depth of the human heart and mind. The Narnia series, too, is definitely worth reading. However, all of these books lack some aspect. That being the crucial aspect of making the book come to life. There is something about these works that is not quite at par with some others. There are very few books in this world that you will read and be changed forever. Upon reading the Underland Chronicles, I was deeply moved. The sheer peril (not only physical, but emotional) that Gregor faces is overwhelming. Only a robot could resist laughing and crying with our hero, Gregor, in his quests for Underland. The character is so undyingly sweet and caring that you fall in love from the start. Boots, so tender and cute, only adds to the adoration obtained by the characters of this book. The ending to this series is positively shocking. It is brought about beautifully, and goes beyond ending. The end to this series demands your attention. It not only concludes one of the greatest series I've ever read; it makes you deeply question yourself and the true meaning of happiness and life.
