Grimnirs (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review New adults book club Goodreads.com.**This was a great story however it had a few intertwining story's about different characters so I suggest that to get a true picture of all the characters that the first book in the parallel series be read first. I have liked reading this book but I did find the story line to be too complex and complicated at times. The main character is Cora; she is a fairly ordinary girl who we meet at the start of the book when she is suffering memory loss issues. From there Cora gets thrown into a world which some of her friends are already aware of, a world of God's and Valkyries much like in Norse mythology. Along her journey of enlightenment she finds that she has developed a new and slightly disturbing power and has become a pawn in a game that was made to tempt a God. Cora falls for the ultimate bad boy and together they prove to be a force to be reckoned with. I liked Cora as a character; I very much enjoyed reading about how she grows as a character and deals with difficult situations and how her relationships grew. The secondary characters include Echo, Raine, Torin and Andris. Echo is Cora's love interest throughout the book; he is a broody male character and the ultimate bad boy. Raine is Cora's best friend and stands by her through everything and is already involved in the world Cora has been forced into. Torin and Andris are there to protect Cora from the danger that surrounds her; Torin is also Raine's boyfriend. The storyline I feel is very complex and therefore slightly complicated, the intertwining story also made it confusing at times. Overall the issues caused by these factors only have a slight influence on the storyline so it still makes for an enjoyable read. The pacing was good leaving it until the very last minute before allowing the reader to find out the fate of Cora and her friends. 3 stars an enjoyable read This is a young adult book, just slightly into the sultry catagory. The protagonists are humans, and various pieces from Norse mythology, blended together into a wonderfully believable storyline.First - I won an autographed copy of the book. the COVER is the first thing I fell in love with. Cover pictures matter a lot to me, as in my other life, I am an artist. This one is soft, and very attractive. And the cover itself feels almost like suede. I don't know if the generally available ones are like this. The heroine, Cora, has been through a lot. Lightning struck down a bunch of her friends, and aftera few other horrors, she ended up in a psychiatric hospital (never a good place for a teenager). As the book begins, she has just come home, and is trying to re-integrate herself into her life. Her parents are over-protective, and, remarkably enough, no one seems to realize that she was gone at school! For three months!Cora had a boyfriend, but he is gone - our first hero, Eirik, turns out to be a Godling, the offspring of two Gods, swept up to Valhalla for training in being a God.Cora sees ghosts (that's part of what got her put away!) Our second hero, Echo, is a grimner, who reaps souls (ghosts) and takes them the Hel. He doesn't take any to Valhalla - that's not his job.The ultimate story is, of course, who gets the girl. The way Ms Walters goes about resolving this is action-packed, imaginative, and wonderfully entertaining. I admit to a fairly strong book-boyfriend crush on Echo....I think that I would have liked this book better had I read the ones that came before it first. However, I liked this cover the best.
