Halfway To Each Other: How A Year In Italy Brought Our Family Home (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

If I could run away, I'd go to Italy! The gelato and pasta are to die for, naturally. But for me, I knew I wanted to run away to Italy the moment I stood on a bridge in Florence and watched a grinning, white haired grandma riding her pink bicycle down a busy thoroughfare. Well, she wasn’t just riding her pink bicycle – she was also chatting on her cell phone and deftly maneuvering between Vespas, trucks, and zipping Smart cars – like she didn’t have a care in the world. I was so mesmerized that I forgot to take a picture. Susan Pohlman captures the essence of that moment in her book. In Halfway to Each Other, her decision to essentially "run away to Italy" to save their family from the decay of suburbia and materialism, spoke my language. Pohlman was realistic and honest about their experience, and she certainly didn't gloss over the expatriate difficulties. However, she does a wonderful job of capturing the joys and heartache of family life through a beautiful Italian lens. A very inspiring message about coming back from the brink of divorce, letting go, and healing of the family and of oneself all told against the quaint backdrop of small town living in the Italian Riviera. In a nutshell, this family was courageous to set roots in Italy for a year without even knowing the language. Their quiet triumphs were moving and eye opening. Although this book was Christian based, the theological references weren't excessive nor offensive for the non Christian. It was just enough to relay the writer's self growth. If you are an Italian aficionado, this peek into the lifestyle is certainly for you. 4 stars.
