Hammer And The Blade, The (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Egil and Nix are graverobbers -- think Indiana Jones, battling ancient curses and demons, etc. They get kidnapped by a sorcerer trying to extricate a horn from an ancient tomb so he can rescue a demonic figure to impregnate his sisters and preserve an ancient pact between the families. A fun buddy book, but missing the kind of character and plot complexity needed for a rating of 4 or more stars. 3.5 stars this one. Note: Seak (Bryce L.) did a great review for this book!! Strong start to a series I'll definitely be reading more in. Good dialogue and humor, creative settings, weird creatures, and good pacing are all things I like to see in my sword and sorcery.I did have a few minor quibbles here and there, some spots didn't work for me quite as well as others, but overall the only real complaint I had was wanting a bit more depth to Egil and Nix. We got some of that from Nix at the beginning when walking through the Warrens and then at the end when evaluating how he's treated women in his life. However, those moments that really help a reader connect to a character weren't enough, IMO. Same with Egil. I know he didn't have any POVs, but I would have liked to know a bit more about his past and what defines him as an individual.Regardless, good stuff and I'll probably be reading the second in the series fairly soon.

One hell of a book. Classic Sword and Sorcery adventure story writing at its best.
