Hard Work: A Life On And Off The Court (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Hard Work is an inspiring story detailing the life and career of our beloved coach of the North Carolina Tarheels. We see Roy as a young child growing up in Appalachia with a family struggling to make ends meet. We see him as a high school basketball star who even then thinks that his purpose in life is to become a coach. We see him as a student JV player and volunteer for UNC with great reverence for Coach Dean Smith. We see him stuggling again to make ends meet for his own family just so that he can again study and learn under Smith as a part time assistant coach. And we see how he earns Dean's admiration and trust moving on to full time assistant and finally how he moves away from the Tarheel family to Kansas where he continues the long standing tradition of excellence at the University of Kansas and grows to love that university and Lawrence almost as much as he does UNC and Chapel Hill. He takes us through the agonizing decision to turn down coming back to UNC and how he simply cannot turn them down a second time.We learn a lot about his standards, his traditions, his strategies and his love for his players and the game of basketball. For those of us who love Roy and share his love for the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and all things Tarheel this is a must read. It has been on our shelves for several years and I do not know why I had not read it before this, but it was perfect that I read it now. Go Heels!!! A fairly ordinary, ghost-written, book about a successful basketball coach. The usual over-long descriptions of bygone games and tournaments. However, Williams adds a little something extra that I've not seen before in this genre; in an Appendix, he lists the names of each of the players he has guided as a head coach.A nice touch, that, remembering the people who contributed mightily to his success.
