Heaven's Queen (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I've now finished Heaven's Queen by Rachel Bach, which is the third and final book in the Paradox trilogy. I previously reviewed the first two books, Fortune's Pawn and Honour's Knight. I won't go into too much detail of the plot for this book because it's difficult to discuss the plot of the third book in a trilogy without giving major spoilers for the previous two books. As I have said in my previous reviews, the series revolves around Devi, an armoured mercenary who gets caught up in a secret war again an alien race.I really enjoyed this third book, it was a good conclusion to the story. The series overall was really enjoyable. The plot is action packed with a good mystery conspiracy plot as well. The series doesn't spend a lot of time on world building, which is forgiveable given that these books are all fairly short, but I did like the setting and the various alien races. I really liked Devi as a character and a narrator, and I love that she's the woman who is really ambitious and violent and it's not presented as a bad thing, she doesn't need to change or give up on her goals despite what happens to her in the book.As I said in my reviews of the first two books, the main negative of the series for me was the romance, which is a little bit unbelievable and heavy handed. This third book was the worst for the romance aspect, and as a result it is my least favourite of the three books in the trilogy. That being said, romance is not really my thing anyway, it's not something I generally enjoy, so other readers may like that aspect of the book more than I did. Overall I really enjoyed these books. The series was just a really light, fast paced, enjoyable read for me. These books are definitely not serious, I read them because I wanted something light and diverting to get into, and so I'm not going to hold them up against great science fiction classics. But for anyone looking for a fun, fast-paced, action-packed science fiction series, then these books are highly recommended. I loved this series. The pace of the story made me want to keep reading not put it down. I loved that Devi's motives were consistent till the end. After everything that she went though she doesn't deviate from her end goal.surprisingly I really loved the world the author created. The world building was just as great as the character development. This book really cemented my love for this series.

I have enjoyed the story of Devi and Rupert and would recommend it to both fantasy and romance fans

It got a little more improbable, and a lot more romantic (the idealized kind).
