Honor's Knight (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

A science fiction novel about managing your fear, duty, freedom to choose your future, and individual freedom vs. the greater good. There is a lot of action, fighting, and outrageous odds, but this book is also more philosophical. Devi balances her honor and doing the right thing against the survival of all the races. She is full of conviction and determination when she decides that “Survival was a price we all fought for together, not a guarantee bought at the cost of an innocent life” (page 244). Rupert also has significant character development: he is changed by his love for Devi, and she gives him a reason to live instead of living in the past. He is really intense and Devi catches glimpses of his memories, but she trusts her instincts and trusts him. I admire how she can admit that she loves him and still act decisively and not make excuses for his actions. A decent sequel that builds on the problems of the first book in a satisfying way.The major problem is the amnesia arc - there doesn't seem to be any point to it, except possibly as a device for Devi to have access to some of Rupert's memories. I think Bach could have found another way to do that, though, and it effectively kills the tension from the end of the first book, as Devi has to rediscover all the problems/secrets that she already came across in Fortune's Pawn. And since the reader hasn't developed amnesia, the section feels like a rehash of everything we already know. These books work best when the action is flying by at such a pace that you can't stop and think about how ridiculous the premise is - so that whole first section is basically a waste. Now, once Devi gets her memories back then the book takes off, but I'm just...confused as to why the amnesia needed to happen. Also, the ending is extremely abrupt. It really feels more like a chapter ending than a book ending. Luckily I had the third ready to go...
