Beau said softly as he reached the side of Immy’s crib at sunrise on Wednesday. Seeing him, hearing his voice, the infant went from crying to a whimper and then she put her fist in her mouth to suck on it, letting him know she was hungry. Or at least that was how Beau read it. By now they had an early morning routine—she seemed to know that when he came into the room the bottle wasn’t far behind, so she usually quieted while he changed her diaper, pacifying herself with the fist sucking. Even so, he made sure to be quick with the diaper change, then he took her with him downstairs to heat her bottle. Once he was ready to feed her he went somewhere to sit—sometimes at the breakfast nook, sometimes in the family room, sometimes outside. Today he took Immy and the bottle back up to the nursery and sat in the rocking chair. Any other day he would have been up for an hour or two before her.
