This is definitely a YA novel. It's a decent story that is pretty well written, but the angst reaches the point of annoyance, as in almost all YA novels. Still, the concept is fairly original—at least, an interesting twist on some familiar plots and themes—and the world was well thought out. I probably would have actually given this four stars but for the ending. I realize this is a series, so some things need to be set up for the next book, but I feel like how things went down in the final pages merely served that one purpose. I don't like it when characters act out of character simply to satisfy an author's desire for suspense, tragedy, or shock value. All that said, it's an interesting story that's worth a read, particularly for fans of other postapocalyptic/dystopian YA novels such as Divergent or The Hunger Games. What an amazing and unique book! Immediately I was intrigued to find out the type of world that Coe lived in! I couldn't put this book down and for me to say it was a uniquely dystopian society takes a lot. Reminded me so much of The Road - there is no hope for survival but for this special girl that is an outcast due to her deformity. Unfortunately, it seems as if I'll have to wait for a sequel which I immediately begin to read as soon as it comes out. I loved Coe's ability to love in a society that knows not even what a kiss or embrace is. I'm so excited to read more of Nichola Reilly's works!
What do You think about Herrscher Der Gezeiten (2000)?
This was just too weird for me. And usually I like weird, but I guess not this kind of weird. :-/
