Hobbled (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

A little weird, with its mix of slapstick and mystery, but quite enjoyable if you can look past the flaws in the mystery and the inexplicable insistence of the MCs not to get the police involved - I mean I get what they think their reasons are, but the priorities are really, really off. Still, not a bad read. I'm currently reading another book by John Inman which suffers from the very same problem and it's not working half as well, though. Some things just bother me in a book. For example, a young man who is supposedly given home arrest and directed by the court not to use the telephone to place outgoing calls, but then is told by his father to call for pizza and groceries if he needs them. That occurs within the first seven pages of this new book, and normally I would let that effect my entire review of a book. But, I put it aside in this book because I enjoy the author so much (not liking the copy editor who should have caught that problem though). Here's the story of two gay young men who live next door to each other in San Diego. One is on house arrest with a broken leg for having a conniption fit at a local burger joint. The other just moved into the house next door (moved in all by himself) while his father is away on a business trip. Well, it takes about three minutes for the two eighteen year old horn-dogs to begin copulating like bunnies. Please note that the sex scenes are not very romantic or intriguing, but they are frequent: by the end of the book, these two young men must have whittled their respective puds down to little nubs. But, I digress. There is something afoot in San Diego . . . Murder (dun-dun-dah with an evil laugh and a clap of thunder). Six young men in San Diego have been found murdered in two weeks, and the goal of our intrepid twosome is not to be one of the next victims. There are secondary characters who push the murder mystery forward -- two neighborhood kids who would make the Baker Street Irregulars of Sherlock Holmes fame look like amateurs, and one potential murdering next door neighbor (who is also hot as hell). Well, I won't tell you who-dun-it . . . But I will say that it was blatantly transparent that the house arrest ankle monitor was going to save our main characters' butts from the very beginning of the mystery plot. And, of course, it helps that this story has a very happily ever after ending. I always like when a story comes together in the end. I am a huge fan of John Inman's stuff. If this review is a little out of the ordinary for me . . . All I can say is that some of Mr. Inman's zaniness must have rubbed off. For sheer entertainment value alone, I give this book five stars.
