Kids live in their own world...WOW! After I read about 5 pages into this I was thinking to myself that this was going to be one of those horrible fantasy books about a place with edible houses and fairies fluttering everywhere; boy, I was WRONG. This book was amazing!!! An absolute joy to read; honestly. After about 20 pages I was hooked and I couldn’t walk away from it; I didn’t want it to end. The characters are superb and the story is both wonderful and moving. This has to be Jerry’s best book yet. It took a while to understand what was going on in this land of Hokey Pokey. I kept having to go back and look at the map and say "Oh, okay. I think I get it." Then about half way through I was sucked in. This was a really new and interesting take on a coming of age novel. I'm not sure, however, if many students will be able to figure this out at first. They abandon books for much less. I don't think they are going to want to read this one. Better to use as a read aloud with a copy of the map up for all to see. The story is worth finishing and discussing.
Pick a metaphor. Your protagonist can be Peter Pan or Jesus. But not both.
