Ατμοσφαιρικό, έξυπνο, πρωτότυπο, ανατρεπτικό, άντε και λίγο αστυνομικό. Η Τζόαν Χάρις έχει ξεφύγει αρκετά από τον "μύθο" της σειράς βιβλίων με τη μάγισσα Βιάν Ροσέ (Καυτή σοκολάτα, Γόβες και γλυκές αμαρτίες, Γεύση από ροδάκινο) κι έχει προχωρήσει σε νέα, πρωτότυπα μονοπάτια. Ίως κουράσει στην αρχή που πρέπει να αφηγηθούμε το "πριν" της ιστορίας, από το δεύτερο μέρος και μετά όμως δε θα το αφήσετε από τα χέρια σας.1610, Νουάρ Μουστιέ, Γαλλία. Μοναστήρι της Παναγίας της Θαλασσινής. Σε αυτό το μέρος κατέφυγε η Ζουλιέτ και έγινε καλόγρια με την κόρη της, Φλερ. Οι καλόγριες υποδέχτηκαν με αγάπη τη χήρα με το ανήλικο παιδί και η Ζουλιέτ εντάχτηκε σχετικά ομαλά στην καθημερινότητά τους. Στην πραγματικότητα, η Ζουλιέν είναι ακροβάτις, εγκατελειμμένη από γονείς και οικογένεια, μέλος περιπλανώμενου θιάσου νάνων, ακροβατών και αυτοσχέδιων παραστάσεων. Βαθιά ερωτευμένη με τον απατεώνα, αριβίστα και οπορτουνιστή ΛεΜερλ (=κότσυφας) ζει διάφορες καταστάσεις με το θίασο, όταν όμως ο θίασος διαλύεται λόγω της παταγώδους αποτυχίας μιας παράστασης που σχεδίασε ο Λεμερλ και του αμαύρωσε για πάντα τη φήμη ο επίσκοπος Εβρέ, εξορίζοντάς τον από τα σαλόνια του Παρισιού, η Ζουλιέτ εξαφανίζεται.Χρόνια αργότερα, στο μοναστήρι, η νυν αδελφή Ογκίστ αποχαιρετά με θλίψη, μαζί με τις άλλες καλόγριες, την υπερήλικη ηγουμένη τους που αναπαύθηκε εν ειρήνη και αναρωτιούνται ποια θα έρθει να την αντικαταστήσει. Η αδελφή Ογκίστ διαπιστώνει με τρόμο ότι φτάνει στο μοναστήρι τους μια ανήλικη καλόγρια με τον προσωπικό της εξομολογητή: τον ΛεΜερλ!Κι εδώ αρχίζει το βιβλίο! Με πολύ ωραία εναλλαγή της πρωτοπρόσωπης αφήγησης (όπου το σύμβολο της κούπας (καρδιάς) από την τράπουλα δείχνει τη Ζουλιέτ και το σύμβολο του μπαστουνιού τον ΛεΜερλ) εξελίσσεται το σατανικό σχέδιο που κατέστρωσε ο ΛεΜερλ για να εκδικηθεί για την ταπείνωση που υπέστη. Αλλαγές και ανακατατάξεις στο μοναστήρι, ο άντρας αναστατώνει τις νύχτες των γυναικών, το ήρεμο μοναστήρι καταντάει κάτι σαν τηλε-παιχνίδι Big Brother, όπου συνασπίζονται συμμαχίες, έριδες, μίση, προστριβές και τίποτε δεν είναι πια το ίδιο.Και η Ζουλιέτ; Ω, η Ζουλιέτ. Ο ΛεΜερλ δεν την έχει ξεχάσει και θέλει τη βοήθειά της για το σχέδιό του. Αναγκάζεται να απαγάγει το παιδί της για να την έχει του χεριού της, ξαναθυμούνται το ερωτικό τους παρελθόν, όμως η Ζουλιέτ δεν είναι πια η ίδια, έχει μάθει από τα παθήματά της και αγωνίζεται να καταλάβει το σατανικό του σχέδιο και να τον εξολοθρεύσει. Πώς θα το κάνει αυτό όμως εφόσον μία μία οι καλόγριες στρέφονται εναντίον της; Ανατροπές λοιπόν, δεισιδαιμονίες, ένα φάντασμα κυκλοφορεί ανενόχλητο στο μοναστήρι, ο λαοπλάνος ΛεΜερλ κάνει δικές του όλες τις καλόγριες και το σχέδιο στήνεται στην εντέλεια. Και φτάνουμε στην ημέρα της Κρίσης. όπου τα πράγματα δεν εξελίσσονται καλά και οι εξελίξεις επηρεάζουν για πάντα την ψυχολογία και τα συναισθήματα των ηρώων.Καλογραμμένο, καλοστημένο, έξυπνο, αγωνιώδες, με καταπληκτική απόδοση του κλίματος, της εποχής, των απόψεων, της νοοτροπίας, της θρησκευτικότητας, της καθημερινότητας των κατοίκων του τόπου. Καλοδουλεμένο ως προς το "δράση-αντίδραση", αληθοφανέστατο ως εκδίκηση, πολύ καλά επεξεργασμένο σχέδιο (δεν πάει ο νους του αναγνώστη για το τι σκοπεύει να κάνει ο ΛεΜερλ) κι ενώ ανατρέπονται τα σχέδια και δεν πάνε κατ' ευχήν, στον επίλογο διαπιστώνουμε για άλλη μια φορά ότι η συγγραφέας χειρίζεται πολύ καλά τα συναισθήματα των ηρώων της, δίνοντάς τους υπόσταση και λόγο, δεν έχουμε να κάνουμε δηλαδή με κάτι μονοδιάστατο.Θα μείνω στον τίτλο πρωτοτύπου Holy fools που κακώς μεταφράστηκε ως Μυστικά και πάθη, παραπέμποντας σε άρλεκιν και ίσως έτσι να μην προσείλκυσε κόσμο. Ιεροί τρελοί λοιπόν ή αγαθοί του Θεού θεωρούνταν τότε οι νάνοι ή οι αγαθιάρηδες που μάζευαν οι περιπλανώμενοι θίασοι για γούρι, όπως ισχυρίζονταν. Σε μια δεύτερη ανάγνωση Holy fools μπορούμε να χαρακτηρίσουμε τις καλόγριες του μοναστηριού, που παρασύρθηκαν από την ευπιστία τους και την έλλειψη πνευματικής καλλιέργειας από έναν λαοπλάνο απατεώνα, που τις κορόιδεψε συστηματικά και τις έκανε υποχείριά του για να ευοδοθούν τα προσωπικά του σχέδια. Holy Fools / 0-552-77001-9What happened here? I loved "Chocolat", and I adored "Five Quarters of the Orange". "Holy Fools", however, seems like it came from a completely different author. The book is acceptable, but not up to Harris' standards. To start, the Mother-Daughter theme that Harris employs so well is deeply underdeveloped here as more of a plot device than anything else. There was a lot of potential here: a nun with a beloved daughter, raising her to be safe from the outside world and yet perhaps a little too sheltered. Unfortunately, the daughter seems a little underdeveloped - neither rebellious and wanting to know the curiosities of the outside world nor a little too content in her cocoon. Instead, the daughter seems only to exist to serve as a kidnap/hostage victim so that our heroine cannot effectively flee or intervene when the madness begins. I could accept the "daughter as hostage" plot device, were the main character not so otherwise one-dimensional. The evil mustache-twirling villain has abused her in numerous ways, and yet she seems intently less interested in bearing a grudge and more intent on mooning her way back into his bed. Once there, however, it never seems to occur to our heroine to tie him up and "persuade" him to tell her the secret location of her kidnapped daughter; instead, she just focuses on having a nice tumble and heading off cheerily the next morning. The lackluster narrative conflicts deeply with the established character of the narrator - she's been shown to have great survival skills and would manage easily on her own with the child outside the nunnery, so why does it not even occur to her to take a runner? Harris' crisp insight into females isn't just lost on our heroine. All the women in this novel are almost irredeemable idiots. The nuns descend almost instantly into madness under the manipulation of the villain. This isn't presented as religious hysteria; the women seem either intensely stupid or completely eager to join the villain for their own selfish reasons. The subtlety necessary for religious hysteria seems completely absent here, which is astonishing because I believe that if anyone could have pulled it off, Harris could have. Again, what happened here? This isn't a bad novel. It's got enough cliches to shake a stick at, and it's incredibly frustrating at bits, but so are many decent novels. But this *is* a bad novel for Harris. You may enjoy this, if you check it out at a library, but don't expect Harris quality. In the end, I didn't hate it, but I was deeply disappointed.~ Ana Mardoll
What do You think about Holy Fools (2004)?
Although I really enjoy reading Harris’s works, I’m beginning to wonder if she has something against the Catholic church. In the majority of the books I’ve read written by her, someone or something from the Catholic church ends up being the baddie, and the Church itself is inevitably portrayed as corrupted and judgmental. I’m not Catholic, but I’d hope that someone who is as lovely an author as she is could branch out a little in her pool for villains.This book, while still engaging in much magical realism, isn’t quite as engaging as some of her other works. It tells the story of Juliette – a former wire walker (a type of acrobatic tight-rope walker) who has abandoned her old life in order to take care of her daughter. She has chosen an out-of-the-way monastery by the ocean in order to do this and has reinvented herself as Sister Auguste. When her past comes back to haunt her in the form of a man she once loved, Juliette must use all her wits and courage in order to save her daughter and the nuns she has come to care for.For some reason, I couldn’t precisely enjoy this story as much as any of Harris’s others. Juliette was interesting, and the suspense built throughout the book was extraordinary…but I never felt quite confident in what was going on. It was as if I never felt in step with the characters. They were there on the page for me to get to know, but I wasn’t interested in them. The story was great, and the setting, and the characters, but it just lacked the zip to hold my interest.

After reading the first few chapters I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy Holy Fools. Juliet, the primary narrator jumps between her life on the road and her current position in the nunnery back and forth and I felt I needed something to get stuck into but eventually there is an important arrival and the story really begins. I really enjoyed all the different characters that Joanne Harris creates and although I haven't read one of her books for over a decade, I seem to remember that this is something she is always good at. The way she writes about life in the nunnery at the beginning and the contrast this creates once Pere Colombin arrives is also well done as is the scene setting of the island that is not an island. The parrying back and forth between the main characters and the mystery of Colombin's plan keep the story interesting and the pages turning and although there is a little too much romantic sentimentality for my liking, I still enjoyed reading about the relationship between la Ailee and the Blackbird.

Very disappointing book. Weak plot: young girl becomes infatuated with a rogue; she is forced to seek refuge and ends up in a loosely-run abbey; rogue finds her; she is still infatuated, even though he takes her daughter away...yada, yada, yada. What bothered me the most is that his voice was the same as her's - had trouble discerning who was speaking at any given moment. Characters were singularly unlikable. I characterize this book as a "contract crunch" book, where successful authors are forced by contract to produce a book a year (or whatever terms). I'm going back to reading first novels - always more well written because the author is intent on making a good debut.
