Honus & Me (2003) - Plot & Excerpts

I've read most of the books of this series but this book is probably my favorite. This text tells the story of the Stoshack family. They are extremly poor and need some money and they need it fast. So Joey Stoshack a kid was offered to clean the attic of their neighbor Mrs. Young. She offered to pay him five dollars. Finally he expecpted. I can tell you the attic very messy. When he's about to finish he notices a box of baseball cards. There he finds magic, a very rare baseball card, reading Honus. He was in shock. Joey tells Mrs. Young he's done and runs of to the baseball card shop. He asks the owner how much would you pay for this card and how much did it cost. The owner answers 100 dollars, he had lied. He runs to a cafe computer and searches it up it ends up costing 300,000 dollars! That night Joey was brought to play with Honus in his team the Tigers! They were playing in the World Series against the Pirates. The Tigers at the end ended up winning Honus's team. Joey woke up the next day he was going to tell Mrs. Young that he hadn't thrown the card away, before he could do anything she ripped the card in half. I love the way the author brings us back in time and how he describes the games at that time. This author has a high IQ in baseball. This book not only you enjoy you learn how to improve in baseball. When Honus helps out Joey. Describer is an adjective for him how he describes the players. Imagery is another huge element to his work. Setting is tough but he completely nailed it. The authors main goal was to make it as descriptive as possible because the book situations are kind of hard to understand. But he did it a great book and author.

Personal Reaction: I didn't particularly enjoy this book, but there are some elements that kept me intrigued throughout the story. I am a big sports fan, but not so much a baseball fan. But, the fantasy element and time traveling kept me wanting to read on and see what was going to happen throughout the story. Purpose/Classroom Use: -I think this book would be great for independent reading for young students who enjoy baseball, particularly boys.- Also, it would be good for students who enjoy fantasy as well, especially the time traveling aspect. - The fantasy element could be used to address a unit on fantasy books and common elements of them as well. - This book would also be good on a unit or lesson relating to the literary element of imagery, the author does really good job at creating pictures with words, especially the world series game. Students could do an activity of writing a story of their favorite sports team/game/experience using imagery to describe itOther: Honus and Me could also be used to demonstrate diverse perspectives and points of view, especially through the character of Joey or Stosh. As well as teaching children very valuable life lessons throughout his journey and meeting with Honus.

Honus & Me is a phenomenally written book by author Dan Gutman. Its about a young boy named Joe Stoshack (Stosh for short) who has a mysterious ability to travel through time, but only through baseball cards. Which isn't much of a problem considering he loves baseball. While one day cleaning an attic of a older lady named Amanda Young he discovers a very rare T-206 Honus Wagner card. At first he wants to sell but after getting nearly scammed by the baseball shop card owner, he decides to visit Honus. Before he leaves he stops by Amanda Young's to see if she knows about the card she was looking at a picture of a young man in a pirate's uniform (baseball team). But she quickly hides it and Stosh knows that she doesn't remember the card. He later goes back in time to meet Honus and figures out that many of the things that Stosh is made fun of Honus was also made fun of for. Like his bowed legs and big ears. Through spending time with Honus Stosh learns quite a few life lessons too. I thought that Honus and Me was an excellently written book, it kept me on the edge of my seat, and is possibly one of my favorite of all time. If you want to figure out if the card shop owner gets a hold of the card, how Amanda's picture links to the story, or what it was like in the life of Honus Wagner, read Honus & Me.
