Hothouse Flower And The 9 Plants Of Desire (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

BOOKS ABOUT YUCATÁN. I read anything I can about Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, but this is a genre I rarely visit. But as love stories goes, this was entertaining and kept my interest throughout. If romance is not your thing, skip this book, but if it is and you're looking for something more intellectural and engaging than your average Harlequin, give this book a spin.I'm not certain the author has even been to the Yucatán beyond the resorts, because the world she describes does not match my experience and the Maya culture represented is a little too earth mother for my tastes. I wouldn't read this book and expect to have an adventure in Yucatán that in any way resembled the protagonist's. It's a fantasy. Hot House Flower is a wonderful, escapist romp - just what the doctor ordered for a busy person who hasn't time to devour a book in one sitting, and whose body and mind are rebelling against the start of another long, cold winter. This book will not encumber your mind with criss-crossing storylines or a billowing cast of fully-realised characters, but it does offer some subtle spiritual insights with which readers may align themselves. The main characters are accessible, if not instantly likeable, however (if you'll pardon the pun) they eventually grow on you.The author's fantastical exploration of botany, mythology and the beauty of the natural, exotic world is more than a backdrop for one woman's personal odyssey. The nine plants of desire and other flora and fauna of the Yucatan Peninsula, lovingly described, are as important as the human characters in the story. Filled with ancient wisdom and with no need to self-actualize, the plants are the perfect foil for the flawed humans who play out their drama in their midst.Overall, a really enjoyable, easy read.
