Hothouse Flower And The Nine Plants Of Desire (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

A quirky and completely unbelievable tale, but gripping nonetheless. I really cared what happened to Lila Nova, as she moved from an intense, shallow, and calculating woman to one of depth and compassion. Lila's was the most rounded and believable character. The other players in the book are more caricatures than characters. No one is as wise and dispassionate as Armand, as evil as Exley, as intuitive and open as Diego, but that's okay. They work together to weave a fascinating story, with a good dose of genuine insight and wisdom into human nature. The book is rife with interesting plant lore, as well. The insistence that plants are somehow sentient and draw behaviours from people, or make things happen that need to happen? Nonsense, of course, but perfectly compelling within the parameters of this beautifully crafted story. It was easy to willingly suspend my disbelief on this point. The current of sex and sensuality throughout the book was fascinating, though again, the idea that plants have a quasi-conscious, sort-of sentient effect on human sexuality moved a little into the realm of 'silly' for me. Again, though, for the purposes of the movement and development of the story, it was necessary and acceptable. More willing suspension of disbelief. :)The penultimate scene with the Bad Guy, David Exley, veered too far into horror for my taste, but apart from that I enjoyed the book cover to cover. In addition to washing machines and dryers, the shop is a tropical plant paradise including the nine plants of desire that are locked in the backroom. Because of Lila’s self-centerdness, the Laundromat is trashed and the nine plants are
