a funny read, especially for someone like me (a single female in her 20s). ms. klausner's dating disasters are those experienced by every girl as they go about trying to find love and it's nice to read someone write about it in a laugh-out-loud kind of way. it's infinitely better if you are someone who appreciates "indie" or "alternative" culture as some of the male characters are archetypes of the guys you may have actually dated in real life.to be honest, though, i did find it lacking in actual dating/relationship experiences (though who am i to judge ms. klausner's relationship experiences? - they are certainly valid and she certainly entertained me!), but i thought she could have had a better variety of stories than "i dated this idiot guy who so obviously wasn't into me but i was so naive that i kept having sex with him and doing nice things for him", which kind of got tired. we get it! girls, stop doing nice things or having sex with guys who have no intention of doing anything nice for you. she probably could have thrown in a couple funny stories about how bewildering everything is when you first start dating someone, even if you both kind of like each other, or other funny stories about her actual relationships and it would have made for a more well-rounded read.perhaps, though, i'm just in disbelief that i've reached the point in my life that i have had just as much relationship experience as someone who a publisher decided was qualified enough to write about it. alas. a good read for the 20-something to 30-something female nonetheless (and males too, if they want to see how ridiculous they seem to us sometimes). I credit this book for getting me out of a major reading slump. There were some real gems, but my issue with memoirs is that it's mostly impossible to keep up the "I" momentum. After a while, I feel like I'm with someone truly annoying and narcissistic. Also, there's only so many times one can make quips that scream "Hey everyone, I live in Manhattan!" Otherwise, I enjoyed it. Candid, timely, and had me chuckling.One thing bugged me so much, and it had less to do with the writing. There were so many moments when the writer was completely repulsed by a guy, or was getting ready to leave his place, and then BOOM: she was having sex. I don't know if it was the writing style, but some of her anecdotes bordered on rape as they were written. It really got me thinking about women's roles and expectations in dating scenarios. Perhaps the author intended this to be so, but seriously, I feared for her safety sometimes.
