I Sit All Amazed: The Extraordinary Power Of A Mother's Love (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
Steve Mikita's story is essentially a tribute to his devoted mother and a testimony of the enabling power of the Atonement. I was inspired by his mother's tireless devotion to her son's physical, emotional, spiritual and educational care. She simply would not give up on her son and his potential. Mildred Mikita was a true advocate for her son and raised him to be the best he could be, despite his debilitating neuromuscular disease. I admire Steve Mikita's positive attitude and marveled at his intellect and engaging testimony. This book was inspirational. I avoid LDS books. (I'm happy with my scriptures and have never felt any need to go beyond that. My loss, I'm sure.) So, that I went to the trouble to find a copy of this and read the whole thing is monumental! Dylan and I randomly attended services in California one weekend last summer and the speakers were Elder and Sister Oaks, one of our Church's apostles and his wife. Elder Oaks mentioned this book and the title just stuck with me. It is a sweet autobiography of a man who has lived his entire life with a degenerative neuromuscular disease that prevented him from ever standing or walking, but who has lived a full and satisfying life despite that - he's an assistant attorney general now. The book focuses primarily on his relationship with his family - his mom in particular - and Christ (he joined the LDS Church in college). This is a great account of a mom and son who didn't lose perspective and let tunnel vision fill their lives with sorrow. A quick, inspiring read.
