I think that the authors purpose in writing this book was to try and prevent something like this from happening again. In this book Eva and her twin sister Miriam go through many problems together in Auschwitz. From starving, illnesses, Doctor Mengele, and many more. With as many horrible things that they went through I think that Eva just wants to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. “I hope in some small way, to send the world a message of forgiveness; a message of peace, a message of healing. Let there be no more wars, no more experiments without informed consent, no more gas chambers. no more bombs, no more hatred, no more killing, no more Auschwitz's.” Eva states this in her Declaration of Amnesty which was read at the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and sums up the point of her book. I think the theme of this book is one big life lesson. Eva states three things she has learned since her experience and they are: “Never ever give up on yourself or your dreams, for everything good in life is possible. Judge people on their actions and the content of their character. Lastly forgive your worst enemy and forgive everyone who has hurt you- if will heal your soul and set you free.” With these three things said I think that they all make up the theme of this book, a life lesson. If you can learn from other people's past experiences and correct the wrongs you can make a change in the world. The style of this book was a narration and a description. I think that this style was very effective. I personally do not like people just babbling on about facts so the way that Eva wrote her whole story was actually interesting to me. I think it is effective because it takes you through her story and its not just her explaining it, it makes you feel like you are in the story with them. At first getting this book I did not think that I would like it because I do not like non-fiction in general but after reading this book it has changed my point of view on non-fiction. After reading the first chapter or so I started to really like the book. Knowing people’s stories and what they have gone through is really cool to me and I didn’t realize it till now. I ended up reading more than half of the book in one day. I dont think that I would personally change anything in this book. I would definitely recommend this book to other students looking for a book to read about the Holocaust or just for fun or even for adults. This book has really opened my eyes to new things and I feel it could make a difference in the world. Reading books by survivors of the Holocaust is always an enlightening experience. With each book, we learn something new about the atrocities and lives of the survivors and Surviving the Angel of Death is a great example. This is the first time I've read a book co-written by a survivor of Dr. Mengele's experiments on twins. Eva's story is heart-wrenching, yet inspiring. While this book is written for the YA audience, any scholar of WW II will learn things from this book. Highly recommended.
