This story was a pleasant surprise.Catryn is a widow whose son Alwyn has been kidnappped by her madman brother-in-law Morris. In her pursuit of them, she steals a carriage belonging to Orion Wherlocke, a man whose family is rumored to be strange and gifted. As they journey together, along with Orion's son Giles, to find and retrieve Alwyn, they discover sides of themselves they hadn't known existed.Orion's view on love is grim thanks to his deceased mother. In the name of religion, she beat Orion when he was younger and left him with horrendous scars on his back. His example of love isn't the greatest, and he doubts his own ability to really care for someone enough to love them. He has his sons and his extended family. They love him and he them. Why would he need to love beyond that circle?Orion and Catryn were able to find and retrieve Alwyn fairly quickly, but they took off after Morris after seeing Giles and Alwyn to safety in hopes of convincing the crazy man to leave Catryn and her son alone. It's on this leg of their journey they give in to the attraction simmering between them and find themselves falling head first into love. Catryn tried to be strong, tried to silently convince herself that she would find her pleasure in Orion's arms without losing her heart, but to no avail. Orion questioned his feelings for Catryn though it was increasingly obvious he thought of her as more than another pretty face. And I think the story lived up to its title. For me, the dare wasn't in being willing to help a woman in distress. The dare was in loving said woman and declaring it. Sex and passion are all well and good, but love has the ability to pull each person deeper into the relationship. It stakes a claim on the other person's heart, pushes a person to go beyond their comfort zone to see to their partner's happiness. They are willing to make changes to their life to have a life that's made better because of the love of another person. While this story can be read as a standalone, I strongly suggest reading the other books in this series as there are characters from previous stories make appearances or are mentioned. Knowing who they are before reading this story helps keep all of that in line. But I do recommend reading this story regardless. The characters will draw you in. Developments and revelations will keep your attention. The ending will make you glad you read it to the end.I can only hope there will be other stories after this one. Especially one for Iago.***Received from NetGalley via Tasty Book Tours for an honest review I am a huge fan of this series and have read each and every one. Catryn’s son has been taken by his greedy Uncle and she will do anything to get him back, even stealing a carriage. When she stops to rest she learns that there was a passenger on board. A little boy about her son’s age, name Giles. Giles had been living on the streets until he recently found his Father. Orion Wherelocke works for the government and is an expert tracker and goes off in search of his son. Once he catches up with them Giles convinces him that they must help Catryn. I have been waiting for this book since I finished the last. The family is colorful, funny and loyal to one another. The story is exciting fast paced and passionate, I loved it. Looking forward to more.
