Il Gusto Segreto Del Cioccolato Amaro (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Sophie Jones is a chocolatier who runs her own chocolate shop. She has had a lot of heartbreak, pain and guilt that she carries from her past so her outlook on life is not very bright. One of her best sellers is a misfortune cookie-a fortune cookie dipped in bitter chocolate with handwritten misfortunes inside. Sophie lives life based on expecting the worst. On her 9th birthday Sophie's entire family was killed in a car accident. Sophie was the only survivor and she blames herself for the accident. She went to live in foster care where she meets Evalynn who becomes like a sister to her. Then just under a year ago, Sophie's fiance Garrett Black calls off the wedding just days before the wedding was supposed to happen and he doesn't even give Sophie a reason. Now, on her birthday, Garrett shows up in Sophie's shop and wants a chance to explain what happened. She agrees to a date at some future time on one condition. Garrett must prove that there is such a thing as lasting happiness by taking out an ad in the paper that is a want ad for proof of lasting happiness. If Sophie receives 100 letters that meet her criteria she will agree to a date. She only receives a few letters until the media finds out about the ad and it starts a frenzy of mail coming in to Sophie. She will need the help of all her family and friends to sort through the letters and she will have to confront her past and some secrets that surface if she will find happiness in her future.I truly enjoyed this story and getting to know these characters. I loved the little misfortunes at the beginning of each chapter and there were a few that actually made me laugh. It was easy for me to see how Sophie could be so pessimistic will all that she had to deal with in life. This was a quick read for me as I kept turning the pages to see what would happen. There was a lot of things that were revealed that held my attention throughout. I think one of my favorite characters had to be the homeless guy Jim. Although he was down on his luck he always kept a positive attitude and took joy in the misfortune cookies Sophie brought him every week. I was glad how the story turned out for Jim. I had a bit of an idea what some of the secrets were but I definitely didn't see how everything would come together and I did really like how the story ended for Sophie.I received a free copy of this book through GoodReads First Reads in exchange for my honest review. I picked this up at in the library in desperation for something to read. Everything I wanted to read was either checked out or on hold. I should know better at this point! It took everything I had to finish this thing. The female character is annoying and frustrating. The story never seems to end. I about lost my mind. But I had to finish it, just to finish it. I should have returned it to the library after the first chapter.I've decided that I can't read stories about wishy-washy, silly women any more. I've lived that part of my life, and I don't want to relive it again and again. Give me a strong female character who knows what she wants! On the bright side, the book was very clean. No junk at all. That was nice!
