This is one of those books that will grab you right from the beginning. Zach has been thrown away by his family at Christmastime and a very pivotal point in his life. He’s about to turn eighteen. This allows his family to legally turn him away. It’s the fact that he came out to his family as gay and their reaction to that that has him putting as much distance as he can between them. Zach’s young age and minimal funds don’t get him very far. The churchyard where Ben finds him just happens to be far enough.Ben loves his job as a cop. He’s young and new at his job. He knows that he is meant to help people as an officer. That is how he decides that the only thing to do on Christmas Eve is invite the freezing, hungry, stray man into his home, well his nurturing mother’s home. Here Ben and his mother set out to help the young man in any and all ways possible. The Christmas Throwaway turned out to be such a touching read. The timing of it was perfect for where Zach came from to where he ended up. This sweet tale follows Zach for a little over two years. The timing allows for him to heal and grow into the man that Ben wants in his life. It also allowed for there not to be a creepy age difference. The romance is sweet and the story is one full of happiness at the end of the journey. I’m so glad I picked this one up. Really sweet story. Zach leaves his family home on Christmas Eve after his father beats him up for being gay. Ben finds him sleeping on a bench outside the local church and brings him home. It turns out to be a wonderful Christmas. I enjoyed seeing Zach go from a scared kid to a somewhat confident adult. It was nice to see the younger, insecure MC be the taller one of the two. Usually the stronger MC is the larger one, so this was a nice change.Sean Crisden narrated the audio and I enjoyed it. I've only listened to one other narration by him and didn't care for it much, so I was happy that this one was good. He did a good job with the different voices for this book.
