In My Time: A Personal And Political Memoir (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I read this because I have an interest in the Middle East. I listened to the first half abridged on CD. It was interesting to hear how he came into the career he had, but the most interesting parts of the book were his point of view on Afghanistan, Iraq and torture. Cheney is unapologetic, and he has no prob saying he disagreed with Bush or others in the administration. He does a good job outlining how politics negatively affects implementation of policy and causes all kinds of unfair punishment to people following orders. I read this simultaneously with Michael Hasting's book on Afghanistan, so it was interesting to hear how Cheney felt about his experiences vs. what other people thought of them. I do sort of think he's vindicated on his views of Russia in light of what's happening in 2014. Dick Cheney has had a remarkable career and is a self-made man--no silver spoon there. He lays out the rationale for all of his policy calls and advice in such a way that you would have to be empty headed or delusional to disagree with his logic. His integrity and honesty has been an inspiration to many in public life for decades. Besides being one of the smartest policy wonks of our time, he is as real, warm, humorous, and personable a guy as you'll ever meet.
