I was completely blown away by this novella and frankly surprised it was published by Riptide as this is straight up science fiction at its best. The writing, plotting, world building and presentation of the theme are as good as I've seen in a work of science fiction. Novella's are particularly difficult to do well, and I don't recall every reading a better one. I should note this is the first book I've read by Voinov and was surprised to learn that English is not his first language.Voinov is known for works that include M/M romance and while this book does contain gay characters and there is one tame gay sex scene, this book is in no way a gay romance. In fact the genders and sexual orientation of the characters could have been changed to any permutation and it would not have made an iota difference to the story.I only give five stars to that rare book that transcends its genre. If this were marketed as a traditional science fiction work then I would give it 4 stars as it is a very strong work, but not quite at the level of future classic. However, since its readers are expecting more emphases on the gay romance, I think it earns its 5 stars for being so much more then that and worth being read by anyone open to a thought provoking work of speculative fiction. This short little masterpiece is joining the ranks of the favoritest of the favorites. Space-set sci-fi with shifter aliens, a believable crippled hero, sweet/hot gay romance and a couple of surprise twists at the end? I don't think this could be improved upon. Maybe just a peek at how Kyle gets on with his, uh, man...? But Voinov always leaves you satisfied, yet wishing for just a little more. Practically an art form. Perfection.
