Insight (Insight, #1) (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Really bad - actually didn't finish it, which is very rare for me. Terrible character and plot development. Totally unbelievable reactions - they start having all these apparently incredible mysteries that are a huge part of their lives revealed to them, but just walk away or drop the subject every time it comes up!!!!! And are angry that they aren't being told more. HELLO????!!!!!Simplistic writing, lots of errors in the kindle version. *sigh* And this storyline held such promise.... The premise behind this book is really good, I think. Sadly, its promise is never realized because the writing just kills it. The grammar is horrendous! So much so that it's actually difficult to read and comprehend this book at times. Between sentence fragments and ridiculous run-on sentences, not to mention "run-ons" where pieces of the sentence don't even have ANYTHING to do with one another, I can't tell you the number of times I had to re-read a sentence or entire passage to make sense of what was being said. I don't enjoy reading books where I have to constanly edit grammar and basic sentence structure.... And listen, I know that tons of authors use incomplete sentences, especially in dialogue. It's the way we tend to speak. But most of the time, they're used in either a stylized manner, or as part of dialogue, but always in a manner that makes sense. More often than not, I felt like the fragments used in this book were more like incomplete thoughts on the author's part, rather than the characters', or simply poor grammar and/or sentence structure. I really had to push myself to finish the book, finding myself bored and irritated by the constant grammatical errors. Ever the glutton for punishment though, I read the preview of the second novel in this series. (Or as this author would likely write it, "Ever the glutton. For punishment, though I read the preview of the second, novel in this series." Seriously.) I kid you not, the main character actually asks how long they have before "the Calvary" arrives (yep, with Calvary capitalized and everything).... Calvary is a PLACE, how is it supposed to arrive?? I had trouble even WRITING that to quote the book! Obviously, the character was trying to inquire about the CAVALRY, but either this author or the editor (did this book even HAVE an editor) didn't know that. Again, I thought this book, and indeed the entire series, could have been SO GOOD...if maybe it had been written by someone else. I'm really just disappointed and frustrated by this whole experience...
