It was a nice night. It was warm, the sky was clear, and moonlight poured over the awning that read Dune Nightclub. A bouncer waited beneath, and he glanced at the IDs of the two women who strolled up to the door. Dune wasn’t the hottest club in Chicago, not by a long shot, but it did okay. There was a steady stream of customers on the weekends and the dancefloor was almost always packed. Things had perked up considerably since it came under new ownership last year. “How often do you work here?” Nina asked. I linked my hand with hers and pulled her toward the front door. “Usually the nights I’m not acting.” The guy at the door recognized me and waved us through. Inside, music thumped at a furious tempo and the bass pounded in my chest. The large, dark nightclub was crowded, and the bar was busier than normal, so I craned my neck to see if Joseph was back there. He sometimes had to help out us bartenders when we got slammed. “You looking for your boss?” she yelled in my ear over the music.
