All of David Almond's books are exceptional--at least, I've read (and own) quite a few and not found anything different so far. Brilliant writing, images, ideas, depth, humanity, imagination, understanding, language, sense of place, history and what matters. It doesn't matter that his books are published as for children/young people--brilliant writing is brilliant writing. If you've not read any of his books and you like fiction that changes you, that makes you think, then you're missing out. I think I'm not the only adult out there who loves David Almond's writing. His sparse and elegant prose explores some deep, thought-provoking issues without getting sentimental or "mushy". There's all the beauty of summer and the wilderness of danger in this book. This is probably the third time I've read it, and would heartily recommend it to anyone who likes Maurice Sendak, Roald Dahl or Michael Morpurgo.
What do You think about Jackdaw Summer (2008)?
I like David Almond but I was not impressed by this book.

Almond's a genius, but this lacks passion. NMCOT
