Japan Took The J.A.P. Out Of Me (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
While this book is technically well-written, I couldn't get past Cook's own inherent brattiness. Maybe she should be commended for eventually adapting. The pay off what she learned didn't overcome, for me, the cost of reading how about her shortcomings. Ultimately, I would have liked a longer book (both years) with deeper cultural reflections. Also I hate the J.A.P. stereotype and I dislike her embrace of it. This book could have been so much more. How many times was I told to write this book. I totally should have. From the viewpoint of someone who moved to Japan and remembers all the little idiosyncracies of the culture, this is very funny. I can't entirely relate to the author as she seems a bit haughty throughout the book, thinking her way is always the best way and the Japanese are laughable. Even when she does finally get it and realizes that there are other views of how things should be done than just her own, I think she still doesn't entirely let go and accept the Japanese view. But nonetheless, it made me remember some of my early days of my Japanese adventure. Some of the mistakes... the funny ones and the downright embarrassing ones. We even shared a few moments in that she also shows up for her first outing with Japanese friends in casual clothing when the Japanese ladies show up in designer clothes. Live and learn.
