Jenseits (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Well, that was messed up. A short unsettling story about tiny creatures that do evil and horrendous things to each other - that premise sounded interesting to me, at least.I think the ideas behind this book are great, but the execution is lacking and poorly done. The story was choppy and confusing at points for me - it kept jumping from one character to the next without a real reason other than getting introduced to new creatures. There wasn't much to bind the story together and a lot of the scenes felt very random and like they were just there to contribute to the overall gruesomeness of the tale. There is an overall darkness and twistedness that is part of every aspect of this graphic novel and it is only made stronger by the way the story is illustrated - childish cartoons and very fairytale-esque. A few panels were quite disturbing and graphic but still interesting and intriguing enough to keep me going. Appearances can be deceiving in this beautifully illustrated graphic novel billed as an anti fairy tale. I don’t have any problems with dark content. In fact, I enjoy having strong reactions to what I’m reading. I definitely gasped in some parts of this story. But sometimes trying to make something old into something new doesn’t make it original. I was disappointed by how some of the stories were introduced and had no follow-up or resolutions. They could have used those pages to make the main storylines stronger. I did end up wanting to read The Lord of the Flies after finishing this book.

What do You think about Jenseits (2000)?

Creepy good. Reminded me of a picture book called Where The Girls Are by Heidelbach that I love.
