This is a review of The Redeemer. I did not read all 5 books but I could not find a listing for The Redeemer by itself. If you like tangled, complicated murder mysteries with interesting characters and great dialgue and prose with layers of revelations like peeling an onion this is the book for you. I loved it. You've got Croatian soldiers, the Salvation Army, drug addicts, money, gun running rings, sex, rape, corruption, suicides, and more. I thought Norway was such a calm and peaceful country. I can see it is very dangerous! I did learn origin of cravat. It comes from the distinctive red neckerchiefs Croatian mercenaries wore when they were hired by a Norwegian king and later by the French in the 1600's. The books I read are the first 3 in the title, and I am looking for the rest 2. Jo Nesbo was my thrilling discovery about tear and a half ago. I got the Redbreast just to check it out, I knew nothing about the Scandinavian authors. I saw a trailer for the Girl with the dragon tattoo and I tough, well, I'll check Nesbo. God. Moody, dark, brutal, honest, smart, seductive, illusive,I could go on and on. His main character, Harry Hole, brilliant detective, who's also a drunk, looser and with obvious contempt for authority, gave a stunning performance. His heart is pure though. He has a clear vision or right and wrong. Restricted by the law, he still finds the way to avoid it. Honest to himself, to his job, his family and those one or two friend he managed to keep, Hole is a real person, troubled, messed up, but righteous, devoted and persisted as a bulldog. He just doesn't let go. Dark and twisted stories. Psycho killers. Dangerous powerful people. I read Redbreast, Nemesis and Devil's star without putting the books down. It gives you completely different point of view to peaceful sleepy Scandinavia. Not so peaceful any more.

Technically this is for The Redeemer, which doesn't have a single option.

Great crime series. Wish they were all available in English now.
