Judy Moody And The Bad Luck Charm. Megan McDonald (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Junior Book LogTitle: Judy Moody and the Bad Luck CharmAuthor: Megan McDonaldCategory: Fiction Choice #5Source: Children’s Choice Award 2013The Judy Moody series has interested students since 2000 and this is still the case with Judy Moody and the Bad Luck Charm. The great thing about this series as that it is a continuation from the next so the characters are extremely well developed. This book does go back and give background information so it is not necessary to have read the previous ones prior to this. This is a great book for students that are beginning to read chapter books, as it is a captivating easy read that the students would enjoy. It tells the story of when Judy, a third grader herself, receives a lucky penny from her grandmother. With this penny she is able to do anything, wins the spelling bee, finds money and even beats that claw game multiple times in a row. Unfortunately, Judy loses her penny and it seems as though she will have bad luck forever. In the end she realizes that she can have good luck without the penny! I had never actually read a book from the Judy Moody series, but I definitely understand why the students love them!! For one of my fiction choice books I choose a realistic fiction book called Judy Moody and the Bad Luck Charm by Megan McDonald. This was the 11th book in the Judy Moody series and it was a Children’s Choice Award winner in 2013. Judy’s grandmother gives her a lucky penny and from that moment Judy is on top of the world. She seems to be the luckiest kid, finds $10, keeps beating the unbeatable claw machine, and even bowls a turkey. She is so excited about her good luck and hopes it can carry with her. Unfortunately, Judy’s lucky penny takes a swim in the toilet. Judy is scared and it seems like all her good luck is gone and only bad things are going to happen to her from now on. Through the bad luck, Judy finally realizes that good luck is out there and that she just has to wait for it to happen, that a penny does not make it happen. This series of books has delighted children for years. The characters within this story have been developed well. They continue to grow from book to book however, the book makes sure to review facts so that the reader can get the whole picture. The main characters like Judy and Stink, her little brother, are shown with defined characteristics which the reader would be able see. The book has themes of friendship and understanding of knowing luck does not come from a penny. Both themes are will developed and easy to understand for the grade level of the book. I enjoyed reading this book. I have read a few other Judy Moody books for other projects and have always found them well written and humorous. I feel they are great books for students who are new to chapter books. They could also be great for a student who may not enjoy reading but may enjoy the character of Judy Moody. With this being a series, it could lead a student to enjoying the full series. This book could be used in a literature circle reading to be included into a theme unit. I am not sure I would make a lesson plan about the book; however, I would definitely recommend students to read it.
