Jungleland: A Mysterious Lost City, A WWII Spy, And A True Story Of Deadly Adventure (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
When you read this book, read it with the understanding that you probably won't like the author. He's incredibly honest, and thus self-effacing. He admits he was whiny, exhausted, and ill- equipped. But read this book anyway. The story of Theodore Morde is fascinating. The theory of Cuidad Blanca is eye-opening. Or is it? Exactly how do you feel about that final discovery? This book is good on a variety of levels, despite the things I disliked about it. I can't believe how much I enjoyed this book. I normally shy away from biographies as they are typically written with so many dates, names, times, etc. that I can't absorb it all. This book felt like a fiction novel and I couldn't wait to keep reading it to find out if they found the White City. The story is told in two timelines, one of Theodore Morde's exploration in the 30's and one of Stewart's in the present day. It's hard to fully understand trekking through the jungle but I was fully engrossed in the story and at times felt like I was in the jungle with them. The description of the hardships they faced are unbelievable and it's fascinating that their exploration continued as long as it did.

The author tried to write another Lost City of Z, but it really fell short.
