Killer Blonde (2005) - Plot & Excerpts

Jaine Austen, not the famous book writer, is back with the 3rd book of her series. This time she is working for some stuck up size 2 wife of a plastic surgeon. The job: to sit for hours on end on a hard toilet seat listening to the woman talk of her life and recipes that sound suspiciously like Gone With The Wind, only eating about a third of her normal portions of food, and being forced to endure the ridicule that Jaine's body is not a small size like hers. SueEllen also ridcules her stepdaughter and says she's too fat, needs a nose job, and so on and so forth. After everyone at Heidi's birthday party hears her wish, it makes her the prime suspect when SueEllen is found floating in her own tub with a blow dryer plugged in the socket. Jaine can't believe Heidi did it so she takes matters into her own hands and looks around herself for this mysterious blonde Heidi saw. And what is the latest scoop on Jaine's dating front? Well, she still has bummer dates, but you'll have to read the book to really know. Also, her parents are at it again with crazy accusations, this time with a toupee. This was so well done, I wished it didnt end. Laura is a gem among writers. There is no reigning pure talent like this. Now I know why my friend covets this author so much. With colorful characters you can actually relate to and the amount of laughs in each book that actually make you laugh out loud rather than chuckle, what more proof do you need to read Laura Levine?

Jaine Austen mysteries are always amusing and this one was no exception. Jaine shows her very human side as she befriends a teenager with a weight problem who is being bullied by her step mother. I love how Jaine is a character who loves food and isn’t afraid to grab an extra brownie here and there.Jaine’s dating exploits were amusing and something I could relate to. I have totally been on dates with guys who are like Tommy the Termite. Tommy the Termite is an actor who is completely full of himself and rude to everyone at the restaurant.Overall I liked this book but the resolution to the murder bothered me. I thought it was way too far out there. I won’t reveal too much but I will just say that the resolution was a huge stretch in my opinion and I thought the writer could have come up with something better.

What do You think about Killer Blonde (2005)?

I do believe I like this one better than book 2. Although I am getting tired of the predictability of knowing that the culprit Jaine catches is not really the murderer and that it really is someone else. The first book, and the second, ok I can see that twist, but knowing it's going to happen every time? I hope the 4th book doesn't have the same twist. It would be nice to get to the end of the book and Jaine catches the right person the first time! Jaine finds herself ghost writing a book for an uppity rich snob in B.H. Here she meets Heidi, the chubby stepdaughter, who becomes the number one suspect when Jaine finds Sue Ellen (uppity snob)floating the dead man's float in the bathtub, the a hairdryer floating next to her.. plugged in. Jaine decides to take on the case to prove Heidi isn't a killer. The ending, although predictable knowing it isn't the first person they arrest for the murder, was a shocker. But it's one of those, "come on now! You can't tell me she didn't know who that was the whole flippin' time??!!" But a great read none the less!

KILLER BLONDE#3 of the Jaine Austen Series------------------------------(Note: This series might be considered "fluff mystery" or "mystery-light." Each book can be read separately and out of order.)I enjoyed this third installment of the series more than the second. While most of the jokes are recycled, there were some new and loveable characters to liven up the mix. In addition, the plot structure is a bit recycled, as well, but since the mystery changes WITH the work assignments that the protagonist accepts, the combination is just enough to keep the story from being stale. I hope that as the author progresses as a writer she will start to branch out a bit. She has struck gold with the idea of a freelance writer who accepts the jobs no one wants--it will be interesting to see if the protagonist is forced to alter her modus operandi with technological changes.

Sometimes you just need to read something that makes you laugh and isn't meant to have deep redeeming value. For that reason, I really like cozy mysteries and this series is one of the best. The main character - Jaine Austen - is funny and real-life and the emails with her parents that are included as a background to each story just make me chuckle. I can also appreciate her love of all foods warm and chocolatey. This is just a fun series to take your mind off things for a couple of hours. Each book is about 200 pages and a quick read. I've finished two and plan to read the rest.
