King Hugo's Huge Ego (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Hugo is a king who is excessively arrogant, and is eventually cursed by a witch so that his head would grow physically larger with each egotistical thing he said about himself. His head becomes massive, and he demands the witch remove the curse. When she explains why she put it on him, he claims to be humble. He then has all the arrogant things he's said about himself expelled from his ears, deflating his head and causing him embarrassment at the things he's said. He humbly apologizes to the witch, who he then marries and makes his queen. My boyfriend and I read this book together, and we really enjoyed it up until the end. I was very pleased that the witch was actually young and attractive. But when she suddenly falls in love with the newly-humble king immediately and becomes his queen, we were really disappointed. The book totally didn't have to end like that. They could have been friends. It was extremely superfluous, and reinforces the idea found in way too many other children's books that the way to have a happy ending is to marry the prince/king and become royalty. Kay. Sure. 4.5 Incredibly haughty King Hugo is poxed by a farm girl and his head grows and grows...and grows each time he brags."Long ago, when people spokewith words like "thou" and "thee,"there lived a king named Hugowho was only three foot three. And though this mini monarchstood no higher than an elf,his ego was enormous --he thought highly of himself."Such rhyme. Such rhythm. What great illustrations - my favorite: Tessa (a sorceress), after being bumped into the river, is grubby, shoeless (a dog is sticking out from under her haystack), she has a bedraggled frog on her head and a turtle on her rear....

I read this book with the kids and it was adorable. The kids agree that it's a good one.

Ironically enough I love Chris Van Dusen but this book did not measure up.
