King Jack And The Dragon Board Book (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
A cute story of boys' imaginative adventures, including fears that can come. A cute twist that was predictable for the reader. Fabulous illustrations. Might work in a preschool storytime, though I think a smaller group would be best to let them see the pictures more easily.12/3/14 Finally managed to fit this into a storytime. Used as opener for Dreams theme. They loved the pages with the dragons and beasts. And I think I pulled off the scary part. They liked it. I think. Not many responses from the young crowd, but it worked. This book is about three little boys named Jack, Zack and Caspar. They decided to make a den for King Jack and his men. They made this fort from things around their house like a sheet, a cardboard box, some sticks and bricks, and some trash bags. This fort included all of the necessities of a great king. It has a royal throne, a drawbridge and a flag. After the castle was built, they spent the whole day defeating dragons and beasts. They returned to their fort after the day was done. Zack's father came to take him home, and Caspar's mom came to put him to bed. King Jack was all alone in his fort. He heard noises coming from outside and started to quiver. A mouse hurried across the top of the fort and a frog croaked a loud croak. Then all of a sudden he heard something coming, some thing with four feet. He swore it was a dragon coming to get revenge. He looked out the fort and saw the four legged thing. It was his mom and dad coming to take him inside. Kind Jack slept peacefully in his own royal bed. I loved this book, especially the characters, three little boys trying to take over the world. I think a lot of young children could relate to this story because they all have wild imaginations just like Jack, Zack and Caspar. I would read this book to children ages kindergarten through first grade, because it is an awesome story and it doesn't have many hard words. It also has great pictures and big words so children can read along. After this book is over I would give them a piece of paper and have them construct a model of a fort they would like to build.
