Kingmakers, The (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I liked Book 3 better than Book 2, which I found to be a bit frustrating. There is a lot more action and some laugh out loud moments (Simon has a hilarious scene featuring a severed hand and a sleepy kitten). However, I felt like while the immediate danger to the main characters was mostly resolved at the end, there were many major issues left completely hanging:1. Greyfriar's identity still hasn't been revealed, and how does Adele plan to get the empire to accept him? They don't address this issue at all. At this point, neither the vampires nor the humans will probably be big Gareth fans. If Gareth planned to stay in Scotland permanently and just be visited by Adele, it might not be a huge deal, but if he plans to set foot in Alexandria again, they'll have to decide on whether it will be as Greyfriar or Gareth.2. The empire is going to eventually need an heir which Gareth can't provide...does Adele plan to name Simon's future children as her heirs? Or adopt one? I would have liked to see a plan in action so I'd feel reassured that there will not be a repeat of the Senator Clark debaucle in the future. 3. Whatever happened to Nzingu? I know she was supposedly mortally wounded, but did they ever find her body? Maybe they did, and I missed it? In this book, I've come to accept that if you haven't found a body, the character isn't dead, which made me worry she'd be planning another assassination attempt.4. Also, what is Adele's plans towards the vampires? Is she going to try and develop some kind of truce with them, or is she going to continue to prosecute the war until they are wiped out? Will Gareth try and take over the vampires again, will he serve as some kind of ambassador, or will he support the destruction of his kind? They left a lot of these important issues completely up in the air. It made me feel as if the authors wrote themselves into a corner and weren't sure how to resolve the vampire/human divide. This was really good. Maybe not quite as good as the second one, but still very good. It was a good end to the series, though I would have preferred to have a bit more information on what was going to happen to them after the end of the book. We do get a conclusion to a lot of characters, though, and it leaves enough information for the reader to imagine how various things go from here. I'd kind of like to see more of this world, and I think there's certainly more that could be told, but it does conclude pretty satisfyingly.
