After a troublesome entrance in this series, I got hooked and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel. The thing I enjoyed the most is that you don't get hit over the head with mighty heroes. The princess is strong, very much so, but she's not invincible or almighty, not fearless, not perfect. Usually I get very bothered by so-called "kick-ass heroines", because they become some sort of wonder-woman who knows no real obstacles. This is not the case. This is a perfect example of a great heroine. About Greyfriar, I liked his protectiveness but his ability to respect Adela and let her make her choices. I liked the way he would risk everything going to the hot south for her. And I loved how the author made the climate nearly impossible for him. Other authors might have been tempted to lessen the impact, to make him a little bit less useless in the heat even if that was against worldbuilding, but thankfully it didn't happen. The politics of his whole thing don't thrill me much, mainly because just like Greyfriar, I can't see how the two of them are going to fix the situation, but still. It's very interesting and I want to listen to the next book as soon as possible! L'avventura, gli intrighi e le battaglie scorrono fluide e scenografiche, solo il lato romance è accennato e l'evoluzione del rapporto tra Adele ed il principe Gareth non ci viene mostrata: rimane nei personaggi, nei loro piccoli gesti, in qualche frase... Ma forse è giusto così, come è giusto che ad Equatoria l'eroe invincibile Greyfriar, lasci il posto al principe Gareth.Vessato dal caldo, il solo vampiro in una nazione di umani e poi in un clan selvaggio di suoi simili, è meno invincibile, ma più umano, come umani sono i suoi sentimenti per la principessa Adele.Nel primo romanzo era Adele sola e prigioniera in territorio nemico e Gareth era l'elemento di forza della storia, ora gli equilibri si capovolgono e ...abbiamo due protagonisti di pari valore e dignità.Non ci sono appassionate dichiarazioni d'amore, nè scene calde, ma non sarebbe stato da Gareth l'affascinante principe dagli occhi azzurri, che umano proprio non è e che, in alcuni momenti, mi ricorda l'Edward mani di forbice di Tim Burton.
