It was, all in all, a pretty good read. I enjoyed the developing romance between the two main characters. And I wouldn't mind reading the rest of the series to see what happens...(**SPOILER**)However, the battle scene...it was just brutal to read. First, not as well written. It didnt suck me in as the rest of the book. The rescue plan was meant to be QUICK, but it ended up being more of an unnecessary all-out battle. Second, the battle felt way too drawn out. 30% of what was written for the scene did not add anything to the story. Excess, excess, excess! It was as if the author wanted to keep on writing for no other reason than to describe everything that happened. Moreover, yes, Joclyn was new at the magic thing, but it was still annoying at how weak she ended up being. I was hoping that seeing Ryland in pain would push her to do something powerful. But nope. It left me feeling like "Seriously? That was it?"Aside from those few things, the story was good. I loved this book! I am so glad that my friend told me about it. I was looking for something different and this was different. I loved Joclyn and even though she thought she was broken she was really a strong young lady. I also loved that this was a story that I could read but could also share with my teenage daughter. I love when I can share books with her that aren't loaded with sex. I can't wait to get the next book and start reading it to see where this story goes and be taken back to this wonderful world that Rebecca Ethington has created.
