La Maldición Del Dragón (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

Pillage follows the story of Beck Phillips, a teenage boy with a tendency to cause trouble. After his mother's death, Beck is sent to live with his insane uncle in the lonely town of Kingsplot. Once there, Beck discovers he has the same gift as many of his ancestors: an ability to make things grow. Including dragons. Beck makes both friends and enemies as he tries to control the consequences of his terrible gift. Obert Skye also wrote the Leven Thumps series, which I liked better. This story takes awhile to get going, and the characters are less endearing. However, there are a few exciting twists along the way. Beck has a snarky side, which is both frustrating and endearing. I like the twist that Beck's gift is also a curse. It brings up some interesting issues. I enjoyed reading it, but it isn't a favorite. It's nice to break up my book challenge with quick, easy reads. Pillage was just that. While the idea was there, it wasn't expanded as much as I would have liked, though I suppose it will be in the second and third of the series. For the size of the book, the beginning was gruesomely slow. While I understand the need for Beck's background story, it didn't need to take up half the book. If there had been another hundred pages, it wouldn't have seemed quite so bad. This is definitely for middle-readers. I would have enjoyed the story more had it been written with adults in mind. While the storyline was appealing, the presentation was lacking: scarce character development, slow beginning, rush ending. Pillage is a suitable read for pre-teens who are just getting their feet wet in the fantasy world.
