3.5At first, I was put off by the book's odd and choppy style. It was like reading pieces of poetry that are disconnected from the ones that come before and after. And then there was one long stretch of will-they-or-won't-they melodrama that I thought would never end. But finally I came to appreciate and eventually enjoy it. It is, after all, a poignant story of a woman who is given no control over the major decisions in her own life. Forced into marriage at an obscenely young age, she has her first child at 15. Even after she finally marries her lover, it seems she lives at his his whim a bit. Baby after baby, no time for herself. But she doesn't look back with bitterness and anger. It seems very matter-of-fact to her. We, who would never have had to live such a life cannot contemplate such perseverance of spirit.Although it is presented as a memoir, it's really a compilation of vignettes told by the author in her mother's voice. For me, if you want to keep the reader interested in a book about someone she's never heard about before, you have to smooth over the narrative a bit. I can see beauty in writing a book like this for the author herself, but it didn't carry as well to an uninvolved third party. It read a little too much like a diary. But overall, I liked it just fine. Despite her incredibly difficult early life, Kamila is a warm and giving person.
What do You think about La Sposa Ribelle (2004)?
Loved it! Wonderfully written about a woman`s journey through life in Beirut. This is a must read!!
