La Verdadera Historia De Twitter (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Mostly just a fun and interesting pop nonfic book. It devolves into Jack Dorsey v. Evan Williams melodrama by the end, and it's pretty clear which side the author is on. I didn't really have a problem with this, although I was a bit confused by the characterization of Jack. For most of the book, Jack is portrayed as being almost entirely incompetent as a business leader or product developer, so the decision to push him out of Twitter seemed fairly understandable....except that Jack went on to successfully run the very profitable Square. So either Jack got a personality and skill transplant that explains his success with Square, or the author's characterization of him as an incompetent childish fool was a bit off the mark. Anyways, it's an interesting look at the human side of Twitter--which is the only side I actually care about, since I'm not particularly interested in tech nor business. The book was a bit overwritten at times, with the author clearly trying to make the events more profound and epic than they actually were or are, but generally the writing was decent. If you're looking for a quick, fun, gossipy book, this is it. Fascinating glimpse into the startup world. But as with any narrative of historical events, I am always left wondering how much was left unsaid, and why did the author lead show us the particular facts and conversations about the characters that he did, and not others. By the end, I really disliked Jack Dorsey, at least as portrayed in the book, and Noah and Ev were both much more sympathetic characters. Was that the author's intention? Is Jack really as narcissistic as he was portrayed? Even with these questions, though, I found the book to be engaging and hard to put down, and would definitely recommend it.
