Last Night In The Viper a Room Exploring The River Phoenix.It is a well written, well documented biography of a talented, beautiful young man who truly, never had a chance to develop in a way that prepared him for the world as it is. His origin is in extreme hippiedom with parents that taught him he was to be, in effect, a savior of the world, but placed him in the Hollywood whirl as bread-winner and support for his entire family when he was a teen. He was put there without guidance except for his own senses. It was a downward spiral that seems to have been almost inevitable.After finishing this book, I am left only with this feeling of sadness. Excellent read (or re-read ... particularly if, like me, you're into 80s and early 90s nostalgia). Obviously, per the title, you can expect this to be a cautionary tale about the excesses of Hollywood. But it's generally well-written and well-researched: the author is a former contributor to Rolling Stone, for whatever that's worth. River Phoenix was a genuinely unique and extremely talented dude who was eons ahead of his time - reading about his interesting upbringing and his evolution into a progressive, thoughtful, socially conscious young adult, is highly recommended.
