Le Journal D'Edward, Hamster Nihiliste (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
When I heard about this book, I imagined that it would have a whole lot more written in it. Of course, I didn't take the time to think that we are talking about a hamster. The book is a short read, 15 minutes maybe, with cute sketches and a lot of funny lines. It's interesting how the authors managed to tell in 15 minutes the story of a character that is a depressed, a revolutionist, a philosopher, a killer and a lover. It's just surprising. It may seem like a children's book but it is a good lesson/read to everyone who gives it a chance. This isn't my usual fare but it is kinda cute. The book charts the short life of Edward the Hamster from pet shop to ... well I won't spoil it for you. It reminded me of an internet meme from a few years ago which details the diary details of a cat and dog - the cat starts their with 'day 267 of my captivity' - if have read that, then this will sound familiar in places. However the one thing I liked about this was a rare use of subtlety - the author (yeah, yeah alright ... Edward) could have rehashed the joke but assumed you remember what happened three pages ago, and so didn't need to. This use a nuance pushed the book from, 2 stars to 4 stars ... see what happens when you don't treat your readers like morons.I didn't find the existential meaning that others may have - but if you have a spare 15 minuites, it is a nice way to pass the time.
