This novel is perfectly in keeping with the historical romance genre. There is a dashing hero, Duke Sherbourne and a luscious heroine Tessa Mansfield. This is a tale of gradual escalation in heat and lust between them. It is of course a forbidden love as Tessa is the Duke’s matchmaker and is in the process of finding him a wife. Unfortunately for them they find that the energy that vibrates between them is far more attractive than any emotion between the Duke and his contingent of prospective brides. Tessa is fabulously wealthy and independent and considers herself, at 26, to be on the shelf. Once the Duke starts to realise that Tessa is a far better option for a bride he finds that he cannot influence her to marry him. He does not offer what she demands, a marriage of love and there is the small fact of what a scandal their betrothal would be in society. Like most historical romance novels there is some intrigue and danger to add another level of spice to the tale and of course the story ends in a dramatic and romantic finale, one to satisfy most of this genre’s readers.
